Celebrating our mathematical thinking

Math is Everywhere

My life is a piecewise
linear function,
reaching all-time highs
and trying lows.

From my window I can see
all types of math,
Squares for garage doors
Long rectangles on a bike path.

I see spheres big and small,
Cones of piles of dirt,
a circle for the face
of a big tower clock.

Math is here, math is there,
You just have to look,
It’s in the world around us,
Not always in a book.

I remember as a small child
Sitting in bed
I would count the ceiling tiles
Above my head

It was quite a challenge
The number was steep
I always lost count
Before falling asleep

That is of course
Until one fine day
I discovered multiplication
And my problem went away

Math is here, math is there,
You just have to look,
It’s in the world around us,
Not always in a book.

Rectangles in my room,
rectangles in my room,
it is surprising how many
rectangles are in my room.

Big and small,
Rectangles big and small,
small like my ipod,
or big like my wall.

Armoire, printer, speaker,
closet, bed and frame,
this is math in my room,
how many can you name?

Math is here, math is there,
You just have to look,
It’s in the world around us,
Not always in a book.

Math is everywhere they say
Down the street or out in Hudson Bay
Kids playing with a skipping rope
Or a coast guard navigating a tugboat

Math is everywhere they say
Around the corner or just down the way
At a softball practice
Or the area of the Taj Mahal

Math is everywhere they say
In every month like July or May
In radio signals and frequencies
In rivers, lakes, and in seas

Math is here, math is there,
You just have to look,
It’s in the world around us,
Not always in a book.
